A Letter Home

Dear Mom and Dad,
As you know, I am in Paris. I live on 3 Rue de la Paix, in the second arrondissement. As you have probably heard, there was recently a terrorist attack here (not in the second, but in the eleventh arrondissement). I am writing to let you know what is happening and to let you know that I am okay. Devastated, yes, but physically, I am okay.
So there was this whole ordeal with the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine. They, in 2011 published a magazine with the cover of a cartoon of Mohammed, and they got quite the reaction out of that; some of the Arabic population were deeply offended and they let the magazine know that. Since then, they have published a couple more magazines with an illustration of Mohammad. Because of this, there were more and more Arabs that got offended by this. A couple of days ago, there was an attack on the Charlie Hebdo Magazine headquarters. 12 people were shot and killed by Mohammad’s followers. One of them was the front desk lady! Then there was a terrorist attack on a grocery store, where they killed 4 more people and took 5 hostage. It really is awful.
I really am not sure what my opinion on this is. It is beyond not acceptable that they killed innocent people because they were offended that a picture of Mohammad was published, but the magazine was sort of warned in 2011 that the Arabic religion was very serious on this topic. They reacted strongly the first time, and given the circumstances, because they have printed more than 5 other magazines with the cover illustrating Mohammad, it is a given that they would have been very, very angry. But on the other hand, these people are only trying to earn a living. They are trying to make money so they can feed their families. They are artists, they are writers. Sorry, *WERE. Anyway, all they are trying to do is their jobs; to get a reaction out of people. It could be a laugh, it could be sadness, it could be thought-provoking, it could be intriguing, and it could even be anger. Whatever the case may be, though, they never had any ill intent. It was totally not justified for people to die over this MAGAZINE cover. It makes me sad to realize that people take things so seriously and so literally that they would literally KILL other human beings because they were upset or offended over something. It makes me sad to realize that people are dead. They are GONE, not living, simply wiped out of existence because some crazy Arab put a gun to their heads. It’s saddening to know that the magazine made plenty of other “fun” about other religions, cultures, sexual orientations, and other popular topics and such, and there may have been angry letters from some who may have been slightly offended, but there were NEVER any shootings like this one. It’s all just very very sad and depressing.

Hope everyone is doing well, and say hi to Boney for me.

Much, much love, XOXOXOXOX
  Your daughter, Mary.
